SRMGPACalculator is an educational project focused on building simple and reliable academic calculators for students at SRM Institute of Science and Technology.
The idea is straightforward: academic calculations like GPA and CGPA are things students need to do regularly, and doing them manually — looking up credit values, adding weighted grades — takes more effort than it should.
These tools aim to reduce that repetitive work. There's no registration, no data collection, and no unnecessary complexity. Just enter your grades, and get your result.
The calculators themselves weren't the hardest part to build. The real challenge was the data.
SRM's official curriculum contains hundreds of subjects spread across different programmes, semesters, and specializations. That information existed in scattered documents — PDFs, regulation booklets, and academic handbooks — none of it in a format that could be directly used in a calculator.
Several days went into reading through those documents, extracting subject names, credit values, and course codes, and organising everything into structured data. The goal was simple: a student should only need to choose their programme and semester, and the calculator should automatically load the correct subjects and credits.
That background work is what makes the tools feel effortless to use, even though quite a bit went into making that possible.
